The Effects of Warming Ocean Temperatures

The different parts of the Ocean usually stay at a constant temperature. But when these temperatures change, even in the slightest, it can have serious consequences.

For starters, the ocean surface water is usually around 60-62 degress Fahrenheit. Up near the surface, organisms like small plankton and small fish and sea turtles live. But, when the temperature changes, it can negatively affect these organisms. It can allow fish to grow bigger, but more often it dwarfs the fish. It can also greatly change the number of fish that live in the ocean.

Some specific species that are being majorly affected are Sea Turtles: Six of the species of Sea turtles are already endangered. This is because sea levels are rising due to the increasing temperature of the ocean. This heats the sand, which heats the turtle eggs past their maximum capacity, effectively frying them. Third, the heat of the egg determines the gender. The hotter the egg is, the more likely it’s going to be female. With less males, the turtle population will soon go extinct.

Two more species, among many, are affected by rising ocean temperatures, also. These are penguins, and polar bears. That’s because the polar ice is melting, creating less hunting, breeding, and living grounds, which diminishes the population.

Overall, the warmer the temperature of the ocean, the less ocean organisms there will be. Which means that their will be less fish in the ocean, and less food for us. I hope you like chicken, because soon there won’t be any Seafood.
